Cold laser therapy is a new innovative treatment to help individuals recover faster after any type of musculoskeletal injury. The therapy is combination of advanced technology with your own body’s ability to heal. The treatments are fast, painless and help recovery. A very low intensity bean of laser light is generated which then stimulates your own body’s regenerative cells to heal the injury. A fair amount of research has shown that cold laser therapy is quite effective in helping muscle healing after injury.
The treatments are done as an outpatient and there are no extensive preparations required.
There are various lasers which can be used to heal injury and a few have already been approved by the FDA. The choice of which cold laser to use will depend on your injury and experience of your therapist.
Cold laser can be used to treat the following injuries:
- acute traumatic injuries to muscle
- back pain
- neck pain
- chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
- joint pain or arthritis
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- tendinitis
- shoulder or elbow pain
- sports related injuries
- strains and sprains
Once the cold laser is applied, most people find relief of pain after a few sessions. Each session of therapy lasts anywhere from 2-20 minutes. There are no major side effects and so far no long term complications have been observed. During the procedure, a small hand held device is applied on to the skin surface and the laser is activated. The energy beam penetrates the skin surface and stimulates healing of the tissues.
The benefits of the cold laser include the following:
- relief from pain
- increased ability of the body to heal
- improved blood supply to tissues
- enhanced immune system to help fight off toxins
- build up of new muscle and collagen
- promoting healing
- reduction of inflammation
